"Jim Crow" Imagery
Description
An account of the resource

The fame of Thomas Rice's Jim Crow performance helped to advance the marketability of what was termed "Jim Crow Images," with depictions in various media such as literature, advertisements, cartoons, and designs on food containers and other caricature-labeled merchandise. For more see the Jim Crow Museum of Racist Memorabilia website and the collection at Ferris State University in Michigan; and The Shadow as Substance: Black Photographic Representation in Response to Jim Crow Iconography [theses], by B. African American Comic Book and Action Figure Hero Collection [Frank X Walker]
Description
An account of the resource

In 2014, the exhibit "We Wear the Mask: Black Superheroes Through the Ages" opened at the Lyric Cultural Arts Gallery and Museum in Lexington, KY. The exhibit was on display September 6, 2014 through January 5, 2015. All items in the exhibit belonged to Frank X Walker (NKAA entry); the exhibit represented only a portion of his overall collection. The size of the exhibit was a surprise to visitors, most of whom knew little or nothing about the many African American superheroes and superheroines in comic books or about the action figures and posters.

Frank X Walker's collection, one of the largest personal collections of its kind in the United States, is a serious venture he started almost 30 years ago. "Over 300 black action figures (and a few other non-white characters like Bruce Lee); 1,000 plus comic books and graphic novels featuring black characters; professionally-framed posters; and original art, including a 5-foot tall caped crusader carved by Lavon Van Williams, all make up the bulk of Frank X Walker's private collection, which also includes original paintings, African masks, musical instruments and stools, ethnic sculptures, and books that focus on positive representations of blacks and other people of color." - - [source: Frank X Walker, via Facebook chat, 10/01/2014].
In 2007, Valerie Bennett-Jones became the first African American officer of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary 2734 in Maysville, KY. She accepted the position of patriotic instructor and historian. Description
An account of the resource

Rosetta Lucas Quisenberry, born in Lexington, KY, was a school teacher for 14 years. She had collected over 1,000 postcards and other memorabilia with depictions of racist acts toward African Americans, many of which are featured in Quisenberry's 4-part series, A Saga of the Black Man, A Saga of the Black Woman, A Saga of the Black Child, and A Saga of the Black Family. A name given to the resource
Willis, "Aunt" Lucy
Description
An account of the resource

In 1987, Aunt Lucy Willis's cabin was restored to 1/3 its original size and exhibited at the Kansas City Museum. The cabin had been built in Trenton, MO, where Aunt Lucy Willis had resided.

Aunt Lucy had first been a slave in Kentucky, owned by a couple named Willis who gave Aunt Lucy to their daughter, Amelia. According to the research of family member Scott Helmandollar, Aunt Lucy had a daughter named Rosa (1842?-1894) who was listed as white; John Willis may have been the girl's father.

Aunt Lucy was brought west when Amelia Willis's second husband, William Neil Perry, moved his family from Kentucky to Missouri. According to Scott Helmandollar, Aunt Lucy was purchased by his family and given her freedom; she chose to remain with the Perry family. At her request, Aunt Lucy was buried in the family cemetery. The cemetery contains the graves of the Perry and Helmandollar families.

Family memorabilia were used by the Black Archives of Mid-America to reconstruct Aunt Lucy Willis's life.

For more see "Slave's rude cabin brings life to Missouri's history," The Wichita Eagle (Missouri), 6/21/1987, Lively Arts section, p. 8F.
