Hooks, Julia Britton
(born: 1852 - died: 1942)Julia B. Hooks was born in Frankfort, KY to Henry and Laura Marshall Britton. A musician, social worker, educator, and juvenile court officer, she and her husband managed a juvenile detention home located next to their house in Memphis. One of the wards killed her husband. Hooks went on to help found the Old Folks and Orphans Home. She was known as the "Angel of Beale Street."
Julia Hooks was the mother of photographers Henry and Robert Hooks, grandmother to Benjamin Hooks, and sister to Dr. Mary E. Britton and Thomas M. Britton.
