Hurd, Babe

(died: 1928)

Babe Hurd won the Kentucky Derby in 1882 aboard Apollo. He was also a noted steeplechase rider.

Hurd, born in Texas, died at the Longridge Farm in Bourbon County, KY, and was buried in Chicago. He had lived in Chicago in 1892, according to his voter registration information, where he worked at the Garfield Park Race Track.

His death certificate states that Hurd was 48-years old when he died, which would mean that he was born in 1880;  that is highly unlikely given that he won the the Kentucky Derby in 1882.
