Colored Skating Rink (Winchester, KY)Thanksgiving night, 1910, the Colored skating rink in Winchester, KY, was the scene of gunfire by deputy policeman John Ballard, who was shooting at John Smith, an African American who worked at the skating rink. Ballard accused Smith of telling lies about him, and when Ballard drew his gun, there was a scuffle. Smith was able to get away without being injured. Ballard was charged with malicious shooting without wounding. The case was held over to the grand jury.
