Rayburn, Wendell G., Sr.

(born: 1929 - died: 2016) Wendell Gilbert Rayburn, Sr. was the first African American to become a dean of a college at the University of Louisville (U of L). From 1974-1980, he was Dean of the University College; he then left U of L to become president of Savannah State College [now Savannah State University], where he implemented the desegregation plan mandated by the Georgia Board of Regents. He would later become president of Lincoln University of Missouri. Rayburn was born in Detroit, MI, and is a graduate of Eastern Michigan State University, the University of Michigan, and Wayne State University. For more see The University of Louisville, by D. D.
