Notes
Lula M. Owens was born in Louisville, KY, the daughter of Jesse L. and Lavinia Elliott Owens. The family is enumerated in the 1930 U.S. Census when they were living in Louisville. Ten years later the family had moved to Rankin, PA, where they were enumerated in the 1940 U.S. Census. They were living with Lula's older sister Ella Thompson, a widow. Lula's mother was also listed in the census as a widow, but Lula's father, Jesse Owens, had remained in Louisville. He died October 3, 1976.
Lula and her mother and siblings had been in Rankin for six years when Lula's mother became sick and died June 21, 1944, three months after Lula was discharged from the Army and returned to Pittsburgh. Lula had served for almost a year in the Army. She had enlisted in Pittsburgh and was separated from her husband, according to her record in the National Archives, Access to Archival Databases. She later married John A. Walker; her name is given as Lula Walker in her father's obituary in 1976.
Lula M. Owens White Walker died in Pittsburgh and is buried in Homewood Cemetery.
